Gloria, having just celebrated her 70th birthday, found herself financially set after receiving a substantial inheritance from both her late husband and his parents. She had always made a conscious effort to generously support her children, offering help both financially and otherwise throughout their lives. Despite her consistent generosity, she noticed a distinct and troubling pattern of behavior, particularly from her older son and his wife.
Her older son and DIL consistently acted with an excessive sense of entitlement. They were constantly asking for more money, acting under the presumption that Gloria would simply cover all their escalating expenses. This demanding attitude starkly contrasted with the respectful and appreciative demeanor of her younger son and his family. The seventy-year milestone would, unfortunately, bring this family dynamic to a critical head.
The birthday celebration itself was relatively quiet but incredibly revealing. While her younger son and his family gave her a genuinely touching and beautiful necklace, her older son and DIL presented her with a large envelope. Gloria initially smiled, expecting a heartfelt card, but was immediately stunned and frozen when she opened the envelope to find a stack of their outstanding personal bills.
