Racks and racks of them. Every color, every style.
We were excited.
After browsing for a bit, we each picked out a few pieces to try on. The only problem? The store was tiny… and there was just one dressing room.
My mom looked at me and shrugged.
“Let’s just share it.”
No big deal. We’ve done that before.
So we both went in, pulled the curtain closed behind us, and started trying things on. Pretty quickly, we realized something was off—the sizing ran really small. Like, noticeably small.
The shop was run by an older Chinese woman, so we figured the bikinis might be imported and sized differently. I called out and asked if she had larger sizes.
She nodded and said she’d bring them.
The dressing room itself wasn’t a real room—just a small space sectioned off by a curtain. Still, it felt private enough… or so we thought.
A minute or two later, without a word—
WHOOSH.
The curtain flew open.
My mom and I were both completely naked.
We froze.
She stood there, holding bikinis, totally unfazed, like nothing unusual was happening.
Meanwhile, we were in full shock.
I quickly grabbed the bikinis from her hands and pulled the curtain shut as fast as I could. My heart was racing, and I just looked at my mom like, Did that really just happen?
We nervously laughed it off, trying to move past it.
“Okay… maybe she just didn’t think,” my mom said.
We went back to trying things on.
I managed to get one bikini on and was adjusting it when—
WHOOSH.
The curtain opened again.
This time, I had a bikini on… but my mom didn’t.
The curtain was wide open. Again.
The woman leaned in slightly and asked, completely casually,
“How is the fit?”
I didn’t even know what to say.
My mom, clearly caught off guard, turned and said,
“Can you please give us a minute?”
The woman just stood there for a second, then finally stepped back.
I pulled the curtain shut again.
We just stared at each other.
“What the hell was that?” I whispered.
My mom shook her head, half laughing, half annoyed.
“Yeah… no. We’re leaving.”
At that point, it didn’t even matter how the bikinis fit.
We got dressed as fast as we could, grabbed our things, and walked straight out of the store without saying another word.
The second we stepped outside, we both burst out laughing.
It was one of those moments that’s so awkward, so unexpected… you don’t even process it until you’re out of the situation.
To this day, we still bring it up and laugh.
But yeah… safe to say—
that was the fastest bikini shopping trip we’ve ever had.
