My 7-year-old whispered at bedtime. “Mommy, the bus driver stops at a house sometimes.” I said, “What house?” She said, “A gray house. He tells us to stay quiet. He goes inside. Sometimes 10 minutes.” over minutes. I called the school. “Mr. Doyle has been driving Route 12 for 18 years. There’s no unauthorized stops.”

Mr. Doyle froze.

The officer stepped out with one hand near his belt.

“Sir, step away from the bus.”

Mr. Doyle’s face changed.

Not fear.

Not guilt.

Relief.
