I stood on the porch, tears blurring my vision as I looked from the tiny, weathered gloves up to the face of the man standing before me. “Billy?” I whispered, my voice cracking under the weight of decades of memories.
He smiled, tears glistening in his own eyes, and nodded. “Yes, Mrs. Miller. It’s me. I never forgot what you did for me on Route 6.” Billy explained that after his family moved, things had been incredibly hard, but the kindness I showed him had given him the strength to keep going. He worked his way through school, built a successful investment firm, and had spent the last few months trying to track down the woman who had saved his life during that bitter winter. During his search, he discovered the public filings regarding the foreclosure on my home.

“Mrs. Miller,” Billy said, taking my hands in his. “I took care of the bank this morning. This document confirms that your mortgage has been paid in full. The debt is entirely wiped away, and this house belongs to you forever. No one is going to take your home.” I fell into his arms, weeping tears of absolute relief, the crushing weight that had been squeezing my chest for months disappearing in an instant.
