“Mommy, there are tiny fish swimming inside my tummy… and they’re biting me.”
Lily appeared in my bedroom doorway at two in the morning, soaked in sweat and bent nearly in half from the pain. She was five years old, her hair stuck to her forehead, one small hand pressed tightly over her stomach. At first, I assumed she had woken from a nightmare. I lifted her into my arms, touched her forehead, and realized she had no fever. But when I tried to lay her down, she released a deep, agonized moan that turned my blood cold.
“Where does it hurt, sweetheart?”

“What are those?” Lily asked.

“I didn’t know there were thirty-six,” Patricia replied.
No one had said that number in front of her since we left the hospital.

Officer Bennett moved toward her with handcuffs.
Patricia threw herself toward Daniel.

“You tore holes in her intestines,” Daniel said, his voice breaking.
“I only wanted you to see that Rachel couldn’t take care of her properly. I thought she would get a stomachache, and then you could file for custody.”
The officers searched Patricia’s purse.

As they led her outside, she screamed that I had destroyed their family.
Officer Carter glanced at the notifications visible on her locked screen.
A message had been sent to Patricia’s sister the previous night.
“Tomorrow Daniel will finally have a reason to take the little girl away. Rachel will look completely irresponsible.”
Daniel read it from several feet away.
Then he looked at me in horror.

Patricia claimed she had never wanted to kill Lily.

He explained that I had requested the preservation of the video evidence and that Daniel and Patricia had tried to stop me from leaving the hospital.
The prosecutor looked at Daniel.
“While your daughter was undergoing emergency surgery, who did you choose to protect first?”
It took him several seconds to respond.
“My mother.”

When Patricia took the witness stand, she began crying before the first question was asked.
“I loved Lily. Rachel turned me into a stranger.”
“Is that why you attempted to make Rachel look negligent?” the prosecutor asked.
“I only wanted Daniel to see what was happening.”

Patricia crushed a handkerchief between her fingers.
The judge leaned forward.

Patricia opened her mouth.

She received several years in prison and a permanent order prohibiting all contact with Lily.
When officers approached to take her into custody, Patricia screamed Daniel’s name.
