“Do you hate him?”
“No.”
“Why not?”
“Hating him would keep him at the center of every decision. He doesn’t belong there anymore.”
She considered that.
“I’m still angry.”
“You’re allowed to be.”
“Sometimes I miss how things were before.”
“You’re allowed to miss that too.”
“Even if things weren’t good?”
“People can miss familiar things without wanting them back.”
She nodded and returned to her pancakes.
Robert’s relationship with her continued slowly.
He became more consistent.
He stopped asking when everything would feel normal again.
Eventually, Maya agreed to spend an afternoon at his apartment.
Before going, she gave him three rules.
If she said she felt sick, he would believe her.

“Yes.”
