Mateo was sitting in Teresa’s lap in the waiting room, chewing on a plastic dinosaur.
He had no idea why everyone was crying.
He was just happy to see his mother.
That evening, we went home.
I opened the refrigerator.
There was food inside.
I looked at Allison.
“What’s for dinner?”
She raised an eyebrow.
I laughed.
“Sorry. Bad question.”
She smiled.
“Actually, I made something.”
I stared at her.
“You cooked?”
“Daniel.”
“Right.”
I walked over and kissed her forehead.
“I’ll set the table.”
She smiled.
“Thank you.”
We ate together.
Nothing fancy.
Just pasta, bread, and a salad.
Mateo sat between us in his high chair, throwing pieces of food onto the floor.
I cleaned them up.
Allison laughed.
And for the first time, I didn’t think of dinner as something my wife was supposed to provide.
It was simply something we shared.
Years later, I would still remember that first week after Mateo was born.
Not because it was the week I became a father.
But because it was the week I realized becoming a father wasn’t enough.
I had to become a husband again too.
A better one.
The man Allison needed.
The man Mateo deserved.
And the man I should have been from the beginning.
