The first time I understood something was wrong, I was standing in my own kitchen listening to my mother-in-law explain to my four-year-old why he was not really part of the family.
Not shouting. Not angry.
Explaining. In the same patient voice you’d use to teach a child how to tie his shoes.
“Sweetheart, family sit at the family table. You’re a guest here.”
I had been married to Daniel Whitfield for six years, and in that time I had learned exactly one useful thing about his mother.
