“Okay,” he said.
Valerie looked slightly surprised.
“Okay?” she said.
“I’m going to worry,” he said. “That’s just true. I’m going to worry and I’m going to need you to call me.”
“Every morning,” she said. “Like I did from the beach.”
He nodded.
“And this time,” he said, “if something feels wrong.”
“I’ll call your wife at midnight,” she said.
He looked at me.
I lifted my mug.
“She answers the phone,” Valerie said.
“She answers the phone,” Owen agreed.
We sat on the porch in the October evening, the three of us, and the coffee was good and the air was cool and Valerie was going to Lisbon in March, and in the kitchen behind us the clean dishes were drying in the rack that Owen had bought to replace the one we had been using since before we were married, the one that had finally given way at a corner, replaced without ceremony, the way useful things are replaced when they have been used long enough.
Valerie finished her coffee.
She put on her coat.
At the door, she pulled me into a hug that had the quality of someone who does not hug carelessly, and she said into my ear: “Thank you. For the phone call and for the tea and for all the rest of it.”
“What rest of it?” I said.
“You know,” she said.
She said goodnight to Owen in the way she always said goodnight to him, with her hand briefly on his face, the maternal gesture that she had been doing since he was small and that he had grown tall enough that she now had to reach for.
She drove away.
Owen and I stood on the porch and watched the taillights until they turned the corner.
“Portugal,” he said.
“She’s going to love it,” I said.
“She’s going to worry me terribly,” he said.
“Yes,” I said. “She is.”
He put his arm around me.
We went inside.
The porch light was on behind us, the October darkness doing what October darkness does, arriving early and complete, and somewhere down the road Valerie was driving home to the house where Gordon had told his bad jokes for thirty-five years, and in March she was going to Lisbon, and she was the most capable person Owen knew, and she was also someone who had called me at midnight from a cottage on the coast and whispered save me with a voice that was shaking, and both of those things were true, and neither one cancelled the other.
She was going to be fine.
She was already, in the ways that mattered, fine.
The light was on.
We went in.
