Aiden had gotten me something, a book I had mentioned wanting in October, and he handed it to me with the lack of ceremony of someone who is still learning how to give and is doing it anyway.
My father shook my hand when I arrived.
My mother hugged me.
The ham was good.
After dinner my father and I sat on the back porch in the cold, not talking much, just sitting in the particular way of people who have gotten through something together and are resting in the afterward.
“How’s the hiking?” he said.
“Good,” I said. “Found a trail up near Rainier I like.”
“Cold up there in winter?”
“Very,” I said. “That’s part of it.”
He nodded.
He was sixty-three and he looked like himself, which was to say he looked like what years of decisions looked like when they had finally arrived at their accounting, and he also looked, sitting on his own back porch on Christmas evening, like my father.
“I was proud of you,” he said. “When you did all that. The loan. The way you handled it.”
I looked at him.
“I didn’t know how to say that,” he said. “Without saying everything else I would have had to say.”
“I know,” I said.
“I’m saying it now,” he said.
The cold was the particular cold of a December night in the part of the state where my parents lived, the cold that had a smell to it, pine and something else, and the lights from the neighbor’s house came over the fence in colored patterns, and my father was sitting beside me on a cold porch on Christmas
evening saying something he had not known how to say before.
“I hear you,” I said.
It was enough.
It was not everything, and everything was not what I was asking for anymore. I had stopped asking for everything somewhere between the kitchen table with the notary stamp and the tow truck on the winter street, somewhere in the space where I had finally understood that belonging was not something you
bought and that the price I had been paying had never been the price of admission to my own family.
I had been in my family my whole life.
I had just needed to learn to say so without a check attached to the saying.
The porch light was on above us.
Inside, my mother was finishing the dishes and Aiden was helping her, or attempting to help her, and through the kitchen window I could see them in the warm light of the house.
My father and I sat in the cold.
It was a good cold.
The kind you stay in because the being there is its own thing.
