I thought about the long work ahead.
Not the twins.
The other work.
The work of two people who love each other and who have understood something new about the space between them and who are going to have to navigate that new understanding going forward.
It was not simple.
It was not going to be simple.
But we were both awake to it now in the specific way of people who have had something made visible, who have seen the thing clearly and who can no longer pretend otherwise.

March becoming April in the slow imperceptible way of seasons.
Nora looked at me with the focused dark eyes of someone who is still assembling the world and who has decided, provisionally, that this face is safe.
I said, quietly: hello.
She blinked.
I said: here is what I know. I know how to make a chocolate cake with you strapped to my chest. I know how to write a list that makes the invisible visible. I know that the thing doesn’t get smaller from looking at it.
I said: and I know that you and your sister are the most demanding and most extraordinary people I have ever met.
She looked at the window.
The street lamp.
The oak tree.
I held her.
Below us, the house was quiet.
Lucas was asleep in the chair with one hand on the bassinet.
Somewhere in the city, Daniel Marsh was home and would call on Monday.
Tomorrow was a day.
The next day was a day.
All of them were days, stretching ahead, with the specific work of each one to be done.
But tonight Nora was looking at the street lamp.
And I was the one holding her.
And my back had stopped aching.
And that was enough.
