I would have walked straight past her if my son hadn’t grabbed my sleeve.
It was Tuesday afternoon, and after a long shift at the hospital, all I wanted was to buy groceries, take Toby home and order something easy for dinner.
My five-year-old was sitting in the shopping cart, quietly talking to himself while I checked items off my list.
Then he suddenly stopped.
“Mommy?”
Something in his voice made me turn.
Toby was staring toward the bakery.
A young woman stood beside the display case, waiting for an employee to box a cake.
Toby pointed at her.
“I know her.”
I barely looked up.
“From preschool?”
He shook his head.
“No. She comes to our house.”
My hand stopped over the cart.
“What do you mean?”
He leaned closer, as though he were telling me a secret.
“She comes when you’re working.”

“She goes into your bedroom.”

My eyes moved toward the woman.

Gregory had always seemed predictable almost to a fault. He planned everything. He tracked household expenses. He talked constantly about our future and saving for Toby.
An affair seemed impossible.
But so did my son inventing a woman who apparently visited our bedroom while I worked.
I pushed the cart toward her.
Every step made my thoughts darker.
Who was she?
How long had she been coming to my house?
And why would Gregory allow her into our bedroom?
The woman turned when she noticed me approaching.
She looked young—probably in her early twenties.
“Excuse me,” I began.
Then I saw her necklace.
And every question in my head disappeared.
A delicate rose-gold chain rested against her collarbone.
Hanging from it was a teardrop-shaped sapphire surrounded by tiny diamonds.
I knew every detail of that pendant.
Because it belonged to me.
Gregory had given it to me for our fifth anniversary.

I rarely wore it because of its sentimental value. Most of the time, it remained inside a velvet jewelry box in our bedroom.
A box that was supposed to be locked away.
The woman noticed me staring and instinctively touched the pendant.
“Is everything okay?”
I wanted to ask where she’d gotten it.
I wanted to demand to know what she had been doing inside my home.
Most of all, I wanted to call Gregory immediately.
But something stopped me.
If she had my necklace, there was already more happening than I understood.

So I smiled.
“Sorry. I mistook you for somebody else.”
She smiled politely.
“No problem.”
I turned the cart around.
Toby looked confused.
“Aren’t you going to say hi to her?”
“Not today, sweetheart.”
I finished shopping without remembering a single thing I put into the cart.
The moment we got home, I went upstairs.
My jewelry box was exactly where I had left it.
I opened it.
The velvet space where the sapphire pendant should have been was empty.
I sat on the edge of the bed.
Until that moment, part of me had hoped Toby was mistaken.
Now I knew he wasn’t.
But one question bothered me.
Why would Gregory give another woman something so recognizable?
If he were hiding an affair, giving her his wife’s unique necklace would be unbelievably careless.
Unless…
He hadn’t given it to her.
That possibility was somehow even worse.
I didn’t call him.

Instead, I closed the jewelry box and began looking at my bedroom differently.

“She goes into your bedroom.”

I suddenly realized I had assumed what he meant without actually asking him.

He was downstairs playing.

But before I could ask anything else, I heard the garage door.
Gregory was home.
I sent Toby downstairs and deliberately left the empty jewelry box open on the dresser.
Seconds later, I heard my husband’s familiar voice.
“I’m home!”
He climbed the stairs and appeared in the doorway wearing the same easy smile I had trusted for ten years.
“There are my two favorite people.”
He approached and kissed my forehead.

Vanilla.
The same soft perfume I had smelled when standing beside the woman at the bakery.
My suspicion hardened.
Gregory loosened his tie.
“How was your day?”
I looked at the man I had built an entire life with.
Part of me wanted to point toward the empty jewelry box and demand answers.
Instead, I smiled.
“Exhausting.”
He nodded.
“Mine too.”

“Toby told me something funny at the store.”
Gregory’s hand stopped halfway to his collar.

“What did he say?”
“He recognized someone.”
The smile remained on Gregory’s face.

“Really?”

“He says she visits our house while I’m working.”
Gregory slowly lowered his hand.
For the first time, he wasn’t looking directly at me.
I continued.
“He also says she spends time in our bedroom.”
“Kids imagine things.”
“Maybe.”
I walked toward the dresser.
Gregory finally noticed the open jewelry box.
The color drained from his face.
That reaction told me more than any confession could have.
I picked up the empty velvet box.
“There’s something else.”
He stared at it.
“I saw her today.”
Gregory said nothing.
“She was wearing my sapphire necklace.”
His expression changed completely.
Not guilt.
Fear.
Real fear.
“Where?”
The urgency in his voice surprised me.
“At the bakery.”
“With Toby?”
“Yes.”
Gregory immediately reached for his phone.
I stepped between him and the door.
“Who is she?”
He looked at me.
“Did you speak to her?”
“Answer my question.”
“Did she see Toby?”
“Yes.”
Gregory closed his eyes.
“Gregory, who is that woman?”
When he opened them again, the husband I knew seemed to have disappeared.
“Lock the front door.”
I almost laughed.
“What?”
“Lock it.”
“I’m not doing anything until you tell me what’s happening.”
He glanced toward the hallway where Toby had disappeared downstairs.
Then he lowered his voice.
“You think she’s my mistress.”
I didn’t answer.
Gregory shook his head.
“I wish that were the problem.”
A chill ran through me.
He took the empty jewelry box from my hand.
“I didn’t give her your necklace.”
“Then how did she get it?”
His answer came quietly.
“That’s what I’ve been trying to find out.”
I stared at him.
“Trying?”
Gregory sat on the edge of the bed.
Then he told me something I never expected.
Small things had been disappearing from our bedroom for months.
Nothing obvious.
Nothing valuable enough to immediately alarm me.
An old photograph.
A spare key.
A handwritten letter I’d kept from my mother.
Gregory had noticed because several items had later reappeared in strange places.
At first, he assumed one of us had simply moved them.
Then he caught the young woman inside our house.
“You caught her?”
He nodded.
“And you didn’t tell me?”
“I wanted to know why she was here before frightening you.”
My anger returned.
“So you secretly allowed a stranger into our home?”
“No.”
His voice became firmer.

“He saw her once. I told him she was helping me look for something because I didn’t want him frightened.”
