My Brother-in-Law Mocked My Navy Service at Dinner …

We stayed up later than either of us should have, sitting on my old secondhand couch with tea neither of us finished, and she asked me more questions, careful ones, about the Navy, about that night, about years of my life she’d apparently absorbed only in fragments over the years without ever putting them together into a whole picture. I told her some of it. Not all of it. Some things I still keep for myself, the way you keep certain rooms in a house closed even to people you love, not because you’re hiding something shameful but because some spaces just aren’t built for visitors.
