THE FORTY-THREE MESSAGES

I remembered something.

Claire at our kitchen table.

Stacks of papers.

A bottle of inexpensive white wine between us.

She had looked excited.

“I think I might actually turn this into something,” she had said.

I remembered kissing the top of her head.

“That’s great, sweetheart.”

Then I had returned to answering email.
