I had been home from the hospital for less than an hour with my newborn twin daughters when my husband pointed toward a second refrigerator in our kitchen.
“That refrigerator is for my mother and me,” Diego announced. “You can buy your own groceries and whatever the girls need.”
I stared at him, wondering whether exhaustion had made me misunderstand. Sophia was sleeping against my chest, Emma was resting in her carrier, and my entire body ached from childbirth.
His mother, Patricia, stood beside the shiny new refrigerator with a satisfied smile.
“This way, nobody argues about food,” she explained. “I’ll take care of Diego and myself. You can handle your own expenses.”
I looked at my husband, waiting for him to object.

“You’re a mother now, Valeria. Everyone needs to take responsibility for their own needs.”
