I should have exploded.
Instead, I opened the drawer where I kept the title and quietly smiled—because she had just made a mistake far bigger than stealing my car.
The first thing I noticed when I got home was the empty driveway.
The second was Madison sitting at my kitchen island, smiling as she said, “Dad needed it more than you did.”
For three seconds, I thought she was joking.
My black GMC Yukon had been beside the garage when I left for a three-day business conference. I’d bought it eighteen months earlier with my own money. The title, registration, insurance, and loan payoff documents were all in my name.
Yet Madison had somehow given it to her biological father, Derek.
“You gave Derek my SUV?” I asked.
She rolled her eyes.

My wife, Laura, entered with groceries and immediately avoided my eyes.

“You knew?”
Laura sighed. “Madison asked me. I told her maybe you’d understand.”
“Maybe?”
“She’s twenty-two,” Laura snapped. “She wanted to help her father.”
I stared at them.

Madison crossed her arms.

I almost laughed.
Derek had hated me since Laura married me eight years earlier. He called me “Mr. Spreadsheet” because I worked in corporate risk management. At family gatherings, he loved reminding everyone that he had been Laura’s “first real man.”
Madison had inherited his arrogance.
For years, she treated me like an ATM with a pulse.

But whenever I asked for basic respect, I became “controlling.”
I pulled out my phone.
“Where is the Yukon?”

There was my Yukon parked outside his apartment.
One photo showed Derek leaning against the hood with the caption: Finally upgraded.
Madison deliberately turned her screen toward me.
“Looks good on him, doesn’t it?”
“Beautiful,” I said.
Laura visibly relaxed.
What they didn’t know was that by 6:14 that morning, I had downloaded every photo, backed up our security footage, contacted my insurance company, and spoken with a detective I knew professionally.
More importantly, I had discovered how Derek intended to steal the SUV permanently.
Madison had taken my original title.

He laughed again.
I almost admired the stupidity.

“Forty.”

I stayed silent until he became uncomfortable.

He chuckled.
“Finally ready to negotiate?”
“Absolutely.”
That evening, Madison walked past carrying champagne.
“What’s that for?”
She grinned.
“Dad said you’re buying the SUV back.”
I nodded.
“You should celebrate.”
She paused.
Something in my voice bothered her.
But arrogance won.
At 5:40 the next afternoon, I arranged six chairs in the living room.

“Why six?”

At 5:55, Derek arrived wearing sunglasses and my leather driving gloves.
Madison hugged him.

Madison looked at me.
“Who’s that?”
I stood.

Derek’s grin disappeared.
Madison went pale.

I closed the door.

Then I looked at Madison.

Derek stood.
