“That woman was going to destroy everything you’d worked for. You were preparing your first major national expansion, and you couldn’t afford distractions.”
Preston slowly rose from his chair, struggling to control his anger.

“I did what any devoted mother would do to protect her son’s future.”
For the first time in his life, Preston felt ashamed of the Calloway name. His mother hadn’t simply interfered with his marriage. She’d potentially stolen five years of his children’s lives from him.

“My mother intercepted your letter. I only discovered it yesterday.”
Naomi fell silent, and when she finally spoke again, her voice trembled with disbelief.
“Preston, I didn’t just send you a letter.”
He gripped the phone tighter.
“What are you saying?”
“When the boys were born, I went looking for you at the hospital. Eli was critically ill, and I desperately needed you beside me.”
“Naomi, nobody told me you came.”
“Your mother told me you’d personally ordered everyone to keep me away from you.”
Preston covered his face, realizing the deception had continued even after his sons were born. But Naomi had one final revelation.
“And before you think about coming to our apartment, there’s something else you should know.”
“What is it?”
“Eli found a photograph from our wedding. He asked me why the man standing beside me has exactly the same eyes as him.”

At eight o’clock, his business partner, Russell Dunn, called.
“Preston, where are you? The Japanese investors arrive at ten. We need you here to finalize the deal.”
The transaction was worth six hundred million dollars, and they’d spent eighteen months preparing it. Closing the agreement would give their company control of one of the Midwest’s largest development projects.
“I’m not coming, Russell.”
“What? You’re joking, right?”
“I’m on the South Side.”
“What the hell are you doing there?”
Preston looked toward the third-floor window.
“Trying to recover something more valuable than anything I’ve ever built.”
“If you don’t show up, we could lose the entire deal!”
“Then we’ll lose it.”
He ended the call, stepped out of his car, and crossed the street. Moments later, he pressed Naomi’s apartment buzzer.
“Who is it?”
“It’s Preston.”
After a long silence, the entrance door unlocked. When he reached the third floor, Naomi was waiting in the doorway, wearing a simple T-shirt with her hair tied up and exhaustion visible beneath her eyes.
“You shouldn’t have come this early.”
“I know. I’m sorry.”
She glanced toward the kitchen, explaining that the boys were eating breakfast. Preston looked inside and noticed a modest but spotless apartment filled with children’s drawings, books, and the comforting smell of toast.
Before either adult could continue, a small voice called from the kitchen.
“Mom, who’s at the door?”
“Just a friend, sweetheart.”
A little boy appeared with round cheeks and chocolate smeared near his mouth. He approached Preston without hesitation.
“Hi! I’m Theo.”
Preston crouched to his height.
“Hello, Theo. I’m Preston.”
“Are you Mommy’s friend?”
“I’ve known your mom for a very long time.”
“Can you make paper airplanes?”
Preston blinked at the unexpected question.
“I think I can.”
“Good! Eli makes awesome ones, but mine always crash.”
Before Preston could respond, the second boy entered the room. Eli was quieter than his brother, holding a notebook filled with drawings of planets against his chest.
He studied Preston carefully, his dark eyes moving across the stranger’s face.
“Are you the man in the picture?”
Naomi froze, and Preston felt his heartbeat accelerate.
“What picture, buddy?”
Eli hurried to a shelf and returned holding an old wedding photograph. It showed Preston and Naomi leaving a church in Galena, smiling as they walked together after their ceremony.
“This picture. Mommy looks really pretty here.”
Preston gently touched the photograph.
“Yes. She was beautiful.”
Eli looked from the photograph to Preston again, clearly struggling to understand something.
“Then why aren’t you in any of our new pictures?”
Preston couldn’t find an answer. Naomi quietly asked Eli to finish his breakfast with Theo, promising they would talk later.
Once the boys returned to the kitchen, Preston turned toward his ex-wife.

She led him to the kitchen table and opened a drawer, removing a thick blue folder filled with documents. Inside were pregnancy reports, ultrasound images, birth certificates, and photographs from the twins’ earliest days.
Preston picked up a picture showing two tiny babies inside hospital incubators. One infant had a small hand raised, while the other was surrounded by medical tubing.
“They were born at thirty-one weeks,” Naomi explained. “Theo weighed three and a half pounds. Eli barely weighed three.”
Preston stared at the photograph, imagining his sons fighting to survive while he attended business meetings without knowing they existed.
“Were you alone through all of this?”
“Mostly. My coworker Joanne visited whenever she could, and Frank from the bakery brought me food when I couldn’t bear leaving the hospital.”
Preston lowered the photograph, his eyes filling with tears.
“I should have been there.”
“Yes, Preston. You should have.”
Then Naomi reached deeper into the folder and pulled out another document bearing a signature Preston immediately recognized.
It belonged to Gordon Pierce, the former company attorney his mother had personally recommended to handle their divorce.
PART 4: THE TRUTH BEHIND FIVE YEARS OF BETRAYAL
Preston stared at the signature on the document Naomi had placed before him. Gordon Pierce, his company’s former general counsel, had handled their divorce at Constance Calloway’s recommendation. Preston remembered signing the paperwork without carefully reviewing it, trusting both his attorney and his mother to protect his interests.
“After I discovered I was pregnant, I tried calling you,” Naomi explained. “Your number had changed, so I sent letters to your office and even went there myself.”
“My mother stopped you?”
“She met with me personally. She said you’d found another woman from your social circle and wanted nothing more to do with me.”
Preston shook his head.
“There was never another woman, Naomi.”
“That doesn’t change what happened.”
Naomi explained that she’d tried contacting him again after the twins were born. Gordon Pierce had responded that Preston wanted all communication handled through legal channels and refused personal contact.
“Why didn’t you take me to court?” Preston asked quietly.
“Because I had two premature babies in the hospital, mounting medical bills, and doctors warning me that Eli might suffer lifelong complications. I couldn’t afford a legal battle against the Calloway family.”
She hesitated before revealing something even more painful.
“Your mother also warned me that you could use your money and lawyers to take the boys away.”
Preston felt sick.
“I would never have taken our children from you.”
“The man I married wouldn’t have thrown me out for refusing to quit teaching, either. But you did.”
Her words struck him harder than any accusation about his mother. He finally understood that Constance hadn’t destroyed a happy marriage. His own arrogance, neglected anniversaries, missed dinners, and refusal to defend Naomi had already damaged it.
“You’re right. I was a terrible husband long before my mother interfered.”
“I never needed a millionaire, Preston. I needed someone who would stand beside me.”
He asked for an opportunity to know his sons and accept responsibility for them. Naomi agreed they could begin slowly, provided they sought professional guidance and established proper legal arrangements.
Before Preston left, Theo proudly showed him a drawing of a house with blue windows. Only three people stood outside it: Naomi and her two sons.
“Eli wants an observatory when we grow up,” Theo explained. “I just want a really big dog.”
Preston smiled through his tears.
“That sounds wonderful.”
“Can you come back and teach us how to make paper airplanes?”
With Naomi’s cautious approval, Preston promised to return Saturday.
That afternoon, he visited Constance at her luxurious home. She was sitting among antique furniture and family portraits when he entered.
“Did you close the deal?” she asked.
“No. I discovered I have two sons.”
Constance lowered her teacup.
“So you’ve spoken to Naomi.”
“You knew about the pregnancy. You knew they were born. And you let me believe she’d simply disappeared.”
“I did what was necessary to protect our family’s fortune.”
“They weren’t a threat to our fortune, Mother. They were your grandsons!”
Constance insisted Naomi had never belonged in their family. Preston responded by placing a photograph of the premature twins on her marble table.
“Look at them.”
She turned away, but he insisted until she finally examined the photograph.
“Eli spent weeks in an incubator while I was signing contracts in London. And Theo was willing to go hungry yesterday so his brother could eat.”
Constance’s eyes filled with tears.
“I didn’t realize they’d suffered so much.”
“Because you never bothered to find out.”
Preston picked up the photograph and walked toward the door.
“You will never make decisions about my life or my children’s lives again. And you will face the consequences of what you’ve done.”
He left without waiting for her response.
For the first time, Preston had confronted the woman who’d controlled so much of his life. But the harder challenge was still ahead: proving to two little boys that their father wouldn’t disappear again.
PART 5: THE FORTUNE HE FINALLY FOUND
Over the following weeks, Preston Calloway began rebuilding his life, not through grand gestures or expensive gifts, but through patience and consistency. Theo and Eli were his sons.
With the help of a family mediator experienced in working with young children, they developed a plan to introduce Preston gradually into the boys’ lives. Naomi made it clear that she wouldn’t allow him to become another disappointment, appearing with presents whenever convenient and disappearing when business demanded his attention.
Preston understood, and he began visiting every Saturday at ten o’clock. He learned that Theo hated tomatoes, Eli could identify nearly every planet, and both boys preferred sleeping with their bedroom door slightly open.
He practiced making pancakes without burning them, learned to distinguish their backpacks, and listened patiently to endless stories about dinosaurs and outer space. More importantly, he began listening to Naomi without trying to solve every problem by writing a check.
One Saturday morning, while the three of them were constructing a cardboard rocket, Eli suddenly looked up.
“Preston, are you really our dad?”
Preston froze. He and Naomi had discussed how to handle this moment with their mediator, but hearing the question directly from his son was overwhelming.
“Yes, Eli. I’m your father.”
The little boy studied the cardboard rocket before asking another question.
“Then why weren’t you here before?”
Preston knelt beside him, struggling to keep his voice steady.
“Because I made some terrible mistakes, and other people prevented me from knowing about you. But none of that was your fault.”
Eli considered his answer carefully.
“Are you going to leave us again?”
“I’m not going to disappear, buddy. I might not be here every single day, but you can always count on me.”
Eli wrapped his arms around Preston in a small, hesitant hug. To the man who’d once measured success in millions of dollars, that brief embrace meant more than any business achievement.
As the months passed, Naomi’s financial situation gradually improved. Preston began contributing to the twins’ living expenses, Eli’s medical treatments, and their future needs through a formal legal agreement.
Naomi continued teaching science, determined to maintain her independence. She also agreed to accept funding for her school’s new laboratory, but only after ensuring the donation was transparent and carried no conditions concerning her employment.
Preston never demanded that Naomi forgive him or consider rebuilding their marriage. He finally understood that trust couldn’t be purchased, and some wounds might never heal completely.
Nearly a year after their unexpected encounter, the four returned to Frank’s bakery. Theo proudly placed four chocolate croissants on the counter.
“Dad’s paying today!”
Frank recognized Preston and smiled.
“Then I’m charging him for every single one.”
“Absolutely,” Preston replied.
Naomi laughed as the boys argued over which croissant contained more chocolate. Watching them, Preston remembered the afternoon he’d first seen her counting coins, while Theo offered to sacrifice his own food for his brother.
He turned toward Naomi.
“I never properly thanked you for taking care of them when I wasn’t there.”
“They’re my sons, Preston. I didn’t need your gratitude. I needed you to be there.”
“I know.”
She watched Theo excitedly tug at his father’s sleeve.
“But you’re learning how to be there now.”
Later, as they stepped onto the busy Chicago sidewalk, Eli slipped his small hand into Preston’s.
“Dad, can we look at the stars tonight?”
“Of course, buddy.”
“Even if you have lots of work?”
Preston glanced at Naomi walking ahead with Theo, then looked toward the evening sky above the rooftops.
