Emily delivered Noah on a Monday after a long labor that left her exhausted. When we brought them home Wednesday afternoon, a nurse reminded us to watch for fever, worsening pain, dizziness, and difficulty feeding. I circled the emergency number on the discharge instructions and placed them beside Emily’s medication.

Ashley hovered behind her and suggested Emily might have taken too much medication. The dispatcher asked me to read the prescription labels, and I discovered the bottles were still nearly full. I could hear sirens approaching before I finished answering.
Our neighbor, Mr. Harris, came outside when the ambulance arrived and offered to drive me to the hospital behind it. Paramedics carried Emily out while another responder assessed Noah, and neither my mother nor my sister asked to ride with them. Mom kept explaining that new mothers were always tired.

Mom interrupted to explain that Emily had refused meals and wanted to handle the baby herself, while Ashley nodded so quickly she seemed afraid to stop. She had complained of chills, pain, and trouble standing, but Mom insisted she was exaggerating because she wanted me home. Emily had a serious postpartum infection complicated by dehydration, and her blood pressure had fallen enough to require close monitoring and medication. Noah was receiving fluids and antibiotics while the pediatric team investigated his fever.
I asked whether they would survive, and she answered carefully. Both were receiving the treatment they needed, but the next day would tell the team more. I appreciated her honesty even as I searched her face for a promise she could not make.
Mr. Harris stayed until evening, bringing me a clean shirt and the charger I had forgotten. The notes I had written were still tucked inside, including the warning signs Mom claimed nobody had explained.

He explained that prosecutors would decide which charges the evidence supported and that the process would take time. I provided my statement and stopped asking anyone to promise a punishment before the investigation was complete.
Ashley requested a meeting through her attorney. I agreed to speak in the attorney’s office because she said there were details she had not included in her first interview. Emily chose not to attend, and I respected that decision without asking her to reconsider.
My sister looked younger than her twenty-eight years when she sat across from me. My mother received a custodial sentence followed by supervision, while Ashley received probation and community service after cooperating with investigators and accepting responsibility. Orders limiting contact were entered, and our attorney explained exactly what we needed to do if either woman violated them.
At sentencing, Mom cried when she described losing her family. She said she had made mistakes, but she never spoke clearly about the moment she saw Emily’s fever and decided to do nothing. I had spent my childhood learning to rescue her from uncomfortable feelings, and remaining seated while she cried took more effort than I expected.
