Last night, Maya knocked on my bedroom door just before midnight.
“Mom?”
I looked up from my book.
“What’s wrong, sweetheart?”
“Nothing.”
She hesitated.
“Can I sleep in here tonight? There’s a thunderstorm.”
I smiled and lifted the blanket.
“Of course.”
She climbed into bed beside me, just like she used to when she was little.
Outside, rain tapped gently against the windows.
For a moment, I remembered the sight of her lying on the pavement.
The cold concrete.
The missing sneaker.
The soaked backpack.
The terrible stillness of her body.
Then Maya reached for my hand.
“Mom?”

“Thanks for coming to get me that night.”
My eyes filled with tears.
I squeezed her hand.

She smiled, closed her eyes, and slowly drifted off to sleep.
