She had been punishing me for not being the kind of woman she respected. Punishing me for not serving her son the way she thought I should. Punishing me for having boundaries, for wanting basic respect, for refusing to smile when she treated me like hired help.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

She stared at me like I had slapped her.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

Then she turned to Aaron. “You’re going to let her talk to me like this?”<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

Aaron stood up.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

It was strange how quiet the room got.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n
