The Door Slammed Shut Behind Him<\/h1>\n

Matthew descended slowly.<\/p>\n

He wasn’t crying.<\/p>\n

That absence of tears was the most terrifying part.<\/p>\n

Children who stop crying become more frightening than those who scream.<\/p>\n

“Mom,” he said softly, “I can go live with Grandma.”<\/p>\n

It felt as if someone had driven a blade into my chest.<\/p>\n

“What?”<\/p>\n

“I don’t want you to be left alone because of me.”<\/p>\n

I knelt, though my legs shook.<\/p>\n

I cupped his face in my hands.<\/p>\n

“Listen to me carefully, Matthew. You are no one’s burden. You are my son.”<\/p>\n

“But Robert says…”<\/p>\n

“Robert is going to learn today that a mother is not up for negotiation.”<\/p>\n

He hugged me so fiercely it almost took my breath away.<\/p>\n

There, with his head on my shoulder, a decision formed.<\/p>\n

I did not scream.<\/p>\n

I did not call Robert.<\/p>\n

I did not send him voice notes.<\/p>\n

I did not make a scene.<\/p>\n

I Made a Different Choice<\/h2>\n

I made coffee.<\/p>\n

I breathed.<\/p>\n

I opened the closet.<\/p>\n

And began pulling out suitcases.<\/p>\n

The first, brown leather, was Robert’s.<\/p>\n

The second, too.<\/p>\n

The third held his Italian shirts.<\/p>\n

The fourth, his polished shoes.<\/p>\n

The fifth, the expensive gifts he used as unasked-for apologies.<\/p>\n

Matthew watched from the doorway.<\/p>\n

“Are we leaving?”<\/p>\n

“No, my love.”<\/p>\n

“Then what?”<\/p>\n

I folded the last suit jacket with calm hands.<\/p>\n

“He is.”<\/p>\n

Robert Came Home<\/h2>\n

At half-past seven that evening, Robert returned.<\/p>\n

He came in talking on his phone, smelling of cigars and arrogance.<\/p>\n

“Yes, we’ll review the contract tomorrow…”<\/p>\n

He stopped.<\/p>\n

He saw the suitcases lined by the door.<\/p>\n

Five of them.<\/p>\n

All his.<\/p>\n

His expression shifted.<\/p>\n

Confusion first.<\/p>\n

Then anger.<\/p>\n

Then fear.<\/p>\n

On top of the largest suitcase rested a manila envelope with his name written in bold black letters.<\/p>\n

Robert Sterling.<\/strong><\/p>\n

He hung up slowly.<\/p>\n

“Claire… what is the meaning of this?”<\/p>\n

Matthew appeared behind me, holding my hand.<\/p>\n

I did not tremble.<\/p>\n

For the first time in years, I did not tremble.<\/p>\n

“It means I’ve made my decision.”<\/p>\n

Robert let out a dry laugh.<\/p>\n

“Don’t be ridiculous. This is my house.”<\/p>\n

I pointed to the envelope.<\/p>\n

“Read it.”<\/p>\n

He tore it open in anger.<\/p>\n

He pulled out the papers.<\/p>\n

He read the first line.<\/p>\n
