He bent over the casket, slipped his fingers beneath a fold of Rachel\u2019s navy dress, and brought up a small black phone that was still trembling in his palm.<\/p>\n<div class=\"code-block code-block-1\"><\/div>\n<p>Marcus reached for it almost instantly.<\/p>\n<p>I stepped between them.<\/p>\n<div class=\"code-block code-block-2\"><\/div>\n<p>It happened so fast that for a second I was aware only of Leo\u2019s shoulder against my side, Marcus\u2019s hand stopping inches from mine, and the faint vibration coming from that little phone.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div id=\"four-ads-part-1\" class=\"four-ads-part\">\n<p>\u201cGive me that,\u201d Marcus said.<\/p>\n<div class=\"code-block code-block-3\"><\/div>\n<p>His voice was low now.<\/p>\n<p>Not grieving-husband low.<\/p>\n<p>Warning low.<\/p>\n<p>I took the phone from Leo and moved him behind me.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhy?\u201d I asked.<\/p>\n<p>Marcus stared at the device.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s mine. An old phone. Rachel must have put it there for some reason.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Leo spoke before I could.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo, Dad.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Marcus looked at him.<\/p>\n<p>Leo tightened both arms around his stuffed bear.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMom said it was hers.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>My mother had stopped crying.<\/p>\n<p>Aunt Martha stood beside the overturned coffee tray with one hand still pressed over her mouth.<\/p>\n<p>The rest of the room seemed to have forgotten the prayers, the food, the late hour, everything except the object in my hand and the way Marcus was watching it.<\/p>\n<p>The screen lit again.<\/p>\n<p>There was no incoming call.<\/p>\n<p>It was an alarm.<\/p>\n<p>Across the screen were two words Rachel had entered herself.<\/p>\n<p>FOR SARAH.<\/p>\n<p>My knees nearly gave out.<\/p>\n<p>Marcus saw the words too.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis is insane,\u201d he said. \u201cShe was scared all the time near the end. She wasn\u2019t thinking clearly.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>That sentence did something to me.<\/p>\n<p>Three days earlier, Marcus had described Rachel as happy, careful, completely normal before her supposed fall.<\/p>\n<p>Now, with a phone in my hand that he clearly did not want me to open, she was suddenly frightened and irrational.<\/p>\n<p>Both versions could not be true.<\/p>\n<p>I looked at Leo.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDid your mom tell you how to open this?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He nodded.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMy birthday.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Marcus took one step toward us.<\/p>\n<p>My mother moved in front of him.<\/p>\n<p>She was sixty-two, five-foot-three on a generous day, and wearing the same black cardigan she had been crying into all evening.<\/p>\n<p>Still, Marcus stopped.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSarah,\u201d he said, forcing his voice back into something calmer, \u201cyou\u2019re upset. We all are. Don\u2019t turn this into something it isn\u2019t.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I entered Leo\u2019s birthday.<\/p>\n<p>The phone unlocked.<\/p>\n<p>There were almost no apps on it.<\/p>\n<p>No social media.<\/p>\n<p>No family photos.<\/p>\n<p>No long contact list.<\/p>\n<p>Just a notes folder, an audio folder, and a home screen photo of Leo sitting at Rachel\u2019s kitchen table with a marker in his hand and his tongue sticking out in concentration.<\/p>\n<p>My sister had taken that picture.<\/p>\n<p>I remembered the afternoon.<\/p>\n<p>I had been there.<\/p>\n<p>Marcus had not.<\/p>\n<p>Leo pointed to the audio folder.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMom said you listen first.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Marcus moved again.<\/p>\n<p>I raised the phone above my shoulder and said, \u201cDon\u2019t.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He stopped because everyone was watching him now.<\/p>\n<p>That mattered.<\/p>\n<p>Rachel had apparently understood something I had not: Marcus behaved differently when he believed he controlled the room.<\/p>\n<p>I opened the newest recording.<\/p>\n<p>Rachel\u2019s voice filled my mother\u2019s living room.<\/p>\n<p>Not loud.<\/p>\n<p>Not dramatic.<\/p>\n<p>Just tired.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSarah, if Leo gave you this phone, please listen all the way through before you decide what you think happened.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>My mother made a sound beside me, but I kept listening.<\/p>\n<p>Rachel continued.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019m not saying Marcus is going to kill me. I need you to hear that clearly. I\u2019m saying things in this house have gotten bad enough that I no longer trust him to tell the truth if something happens.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Marcus whispered my sister\u2019s name as if correcting her could somehow reach backward through time.<\/p>\n<p>The recording continued.<\/p>\n<p>Rachel said Marcus had started taking her car keys during arguments so she could not leave until he was ready for the conversation to be over.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div id=\"four-ads-part-2\" class=\"four-ads-part\">\n<p>She said he had begun checking their accounts, questioning ordinary purchases, and threatening to keep Leo from her if she tried to move out.<\/p>\n<p>She said the arguments had become less about solving anything and more about making her prove she would stay.<\/p>\n<p>Then she mentioned the dress.<\/p>\n<p>The navy dress.<\/p>\n<p>I felt my skin turn cold.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMarcus bought it for me,\u201d Rachel said on the recording. \u201cHe calls it my nice dress. I hate it. Sarah will know that because she\u2019s never seen me choose it once.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I looked toward the casket.<\/p>\n<p>Marcus had told us it was Rachel\u2019s favorite.<\/p>\n<p>Rachel\u2019s recorded voice went on.<\/p>\n<p>She explained that she had hidden the phone inside a loose section of the dress lining because Marcus liked the dress enough that he would never throw it away, while she disliked it enough that he would not expect her to use it for anything important.<\/p>\n<p>She had shown Leo the hidden opening without telling him everything stored on the device.<\/p>\n<p>If something happened to her and Marcus took control of the arrangements, she believed he would choose that dress because he had always insisted it made her look \u201cput together.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She had told Leo that if he ever saw her wearing it when she could not speak for herself, he was supposed to stay close, switch the phone on the way she had shown him, and wait for its midnight alarm.<\/p>\n<p>Then he was to give it to me.<\/p>\n<p>My eight-year-old nephew had followed every instruction.<\/p>\n<p>He had not been sitting beside his dead mother because he could not understand she was gone.<\/p>\n<p>He had been protecting the one thing she had asked him to protect.<\/p>\n<p>Marcus turned toward him.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou shouldn\u2019t have put this on him, Rachel.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Leo flinched at his father\u2019s voice.<\/p>\n<p>I pulled him closer.<\/p>\n<p>On the recording, Rachel seemed to know exactly what objection Marcus would make.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI know Leo is a child,\u201d she said. \u201cThat\u2019s why I didn\u2019t tell him what this was about.
